Reality vs. Story

When we are young

They tell us wonderful tales

Of faith, hope, and beauty

And how belief never fails.

We are told of princes and princesses

And the great love they hold

Of magick spells and the fey

And their many secrets untold.

They tell us of brave young knights

Defeating the monsters afraid of the light

Of "Prince Charmings"

To hold you through the dark, scary night.

But behind these stories

many secrets are kept

And when we grow old and face the world

From the cracks these secrets crept.

Monsters really do exist

And they will do their best to destroy you

And tear you down, piece by little piece

And make you believe the good things about you just aren't true.

"Prince Charmings" don't exist.

They can't sweep you off your feet.

No matter how hard you wish

You can't be saved from the world you won't greet.

People don't always want to be helped

And they will be on the attack

And it will make you feel bad

And wonder if there is something you lack.

Being a romantic and a cynic

is a very contradictory thing

One side looks down on the other

For being able to leap and sing.

But it might yet be proven good

To be able to hope for true love

And yet know not to treat it

As a gift sent from above.
