As the first period bell rings
I close my eyes
Breathe the air of the world
Before I am enclosed
In a cage full of adolescent
Hungry to learn more

"Here it goes"
as I close my eyes
I feel myself reaching
Reaching for some bit
Of tranquility
I grip the rings of my backpack
To only feel the feeling
Of a lit light bulb

Its the beginning and end
It's my back scratch
My kick back
Smiles and more

The end of my school day
Is the same feeling
African slaves embodied when Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery
I shut my eyes tighter
I see my pillows and blankets
Just waiting to encompass
The warmth of my body

With my eyes still closed
In my pupitre
I take my last breath
Reality struck

It's only first period
