A Poem About a Cold Night

There is something strangely comforting

About standing in the dark

Overlooking New York City

In a park across the bay

In the dead of winter

At some point before midnight

Leaning lightly against a railing

Ungloved hands gripping tight

Thick coat over the torso

Hat snuggly capped on head

Fur-lined shoes - Probably Uggs

Glasses stuck to the bridge of my nose

The city really never sleeps

Bright lights made it glow

The sounds were all but muted

The light reflecting gently off the water

Stars were just barely visible

The shimmer of nightlife was staggering

Nose is red and can’t be felt

Cheeks sting when touched

Fingers stay in pockets

Toes nip at frostbite

Breath in the frigid air

And breathe out a pleasant looking vapor

I remember that so vividly

Standing in that bayside park

With people I hardly knew

Cold slightly burning my face

A warmth permeating my chest

I’d never felt more tired, nor more alive
