Once Upon A Time

Dear Somebody,

Sometimes

I sit back and wonder…

What is it you’re doing again?

What is it that you’re really going after in life?

Because once upon a time it was much different

Than what I would imagine

You would tell me now.

Because once upon a time

You would go on

And on

    And on

        And on

About how I was “the one for you”

And how

“You would never leave me”

Once upon a time

You thought of that as a heinous crime

That you would never be able

To bring yourself

To

    C

        O

            M

                M

                    I

                        T

But once upon a time

You were also “the one for me”

And I would never have been able

To bring myself to get over you,

Had you not pulled the veil

From over my eyes

Letting the duct tape rip out

The sensitive hairs

All around my eyes

And the lashes that I was so proud of

Once upon a time

You destroyed

E V E R Y T H I N G

That I was proud of

You took my vulnerability

And loved

Using it to your advantage

And

Once upon a time

I would have done anything for you

You had me wrapped around

Your long and skinny finger

But no longer

So now

When my children hear “once upon a time”

They’ll know about the monsters like you

The pretty boys

Who will promise the world

And tell you

“Everything’s going to be okay;
“I have a handle on it.”

My kids will learn our once upon a time

About how I was the dragon

Who you only saw as

A damsel in distress

And all along

You were really just the prince

Who had come to slay me

Sincerely,

Nobody
