An Ode to High School
Location
First to our forever loving parents who we can't even begin to thank,
for your constant support and college funding in the bank.
For the car rides to school when we were freshman and couldn't drive,
for setting an example that we could only wish to strive.
For paying for our field trips and miscellaneous expenses,
and for letting us learn from our own consequences.
And to my own parents who I owe every ounce of my success,
thank you for everything in my times of triumph and times of distress.
You pushed me to my limits and gave me a reason to persevere,
and instilled in me the values that to this day I still adhere.
Mom, Dad, Stepmom, and Stepdad, thank you for supporting me in every endeavor I pursued,
and for counting every blessing that over the years I had accrued.
Parents, though we give you a hard time and put you into debt,
we still love you with all our hearts, at least that's one thing you can't forget.
Now to the teachers of our youth who've been there from the start,
we certainly couldn't have done it without your part.
We stay after school for extra help and advice,
with an open door we take a seat not thinking twice.
Thank you for the lessons you teach us every day,
regardless if it’s in the classroom or an experience along the way.
I learned how to communicate and diagram the biological processes of life,
how to integrate a trig function with overwhelming strife.
I can build a pasta bridge and tell you the ending of The Great Gatsby,
puedo hablar un oración en español, como “Senora, te amo a ti”.
I can calculate the number of moles in a liter of gas from the atmosphere
and count the number of metrical feet in a play written by Shakespeare.
I can draw a Philips curve and tell you the kind of fiscal policy to install,
and determine the type angle at which to hit a tennis ball.
All of this knowledge I learned here at school,
has ultimately led me to use education as a tool.
Unfortunately I still don’t know how to remember not to forget,
or how not to lose my belongings and do things I won’t regret.
Teachers, you've encouraged us students in more ways than one,
by building us a future much brighter than the sun.
Thank you for your immeasurable efforts and hours of your time,
and giving us the ladder of success to climb.
Finally, to my fellow classmates we've longed for this day,
ever since we stepped into high school and accepted the Lehman way.
Having three different principals over the course of the years,
didn't dampen our Lobo spirit or cripple our cheers.
It caused us to become a nation of Integrity, Wisdom, and Pride,
where in the halls of the silver and the blue our hearts shall reside.
I know we'll start new paths and go our separate ways,
but never forget where we came from and cherish our high school days.
So don't ever stop dreaming and always reach for the stars
because class of 2013, the future is ours!
