This is Not a Love Story

When I first saw you,
I didn’t think much of you to be perfectly honest

This is not some bullshit story of love at first sight,
I did not see stars dancing in your eyes or thick rose bushes in your lips
What I saw was the face of the girl I ran to whenever my shoelaces became undone in kindergarten

This is the story of how..
We dug around the sandbox again
I didn’t expect to find a time capsule buried in our conversations
A living anachronism breathing in stale air
Showing and telling the treasures of another age

This is the story of how..
We played hide and seek again
I chased you behind a tree only to find a songbird fallen out of its nest
You spoke to me in phrases of a familiar lullaby
A voice so heavily laced with serotonin that I remembered my dreams from nap times that occurred 12 years ago

Then I started to see the flowers between your nails
I wanted to hold them in my hands
Tell you that they smelled like daffodils in the spring- but I didn’t

I learned not to pick flowers at outdoor science camp in the 6th grade
Do not choke them in clutched fists
Do not rob them of their beauty
Let them grow in fertile soil for the entire world to see

Now I’m left wondering whether the flowers were weeping or merely rustling in the breeze I left behind
