Not Far Enough

Fri, 03/31/2017 - 21:02 -- rcowan

America has come far

from the days of slavery,

of abuse and torture,

pain

of trading and beating,

suffering

but not far enough.

America has come far

from the days of Reconstruction,

of segregation and prejudice,

fear

of hanging and intimidating,

oppressing

but not far enough.

America has come far

from the days of Civil Rights,

of inequality and division,

shame

of boycotting and marching,

fighting

but not far enough.

Land of the free,

home of the brave

words

we hold dear,

are they true?

Does freedom

of education

of employment

of housing

of wealth

exist?

Does equality

for genders

for races

for classes

for religions

exist?

To recognize change

is the first step

To have a vision for change

comes next

To make change

follows.

America has come far,

but not far enough

We must fight

for tolerance

for acceptance

for growth

for change

to make America great.
