Nightmare (after Edgar Allen Poe)

Foresight viewed near end of day

Hath given passing fear

and broken cries of destined fray

now make my mind unclear.

No! how can dreams of Satan’s knights

Bring forth what has been not

Yet slither through with poison sight

and leave my mind to rot?

What horrid image that whispers now

With scattered screams surrounding

Hath shaken frame as death knows how

My withered essence pounding.

How can this shadow, in dusk and dawn,

Perish from the skies?

Through bold array Thy Son has spawn

To save my weary eyes.
