The New Fairy-tale

We all know how it goes

'Once upon a time' to 'happily ever after'

The same words, the same stories, the same messages spread:

'Some day your prince will come'

'Believe in magic'

'Follow your dreams'

We're tired of the same old lines

Worn out like the books they're printed in

We need a new story

One with sprawling heroines

Whose stories are free from the restraints of a prince

One with main characters who work hard

Who are beaten down time and time again

But still carry on

One with grit

To show the new generations

That your dreams will not be handed to you on a silver platter

But instead must be fought for

With hearts of gold and heads of steel

We need heroes and heroines

Who march on through snow and rain

Not only for themselves

But to the aid of those in need

We have enough tales to remind us

To fall in love

To have faith in the impossible

To live out our passions

We need some to remind us

That this life is not just for following our heart

And waiting on magic to solve the problems

But instead is for working hard for our goals

And helping others do the same

Instead of waiting for these tales to be written

We shall write our own

This poem is about:
Our world
