In a Nation of Animals

The goal is to live like you aren't going to die, baby boy

See, one day you are gonna grow bigger and stronger,

You'll no longer suckle my breast and instead you'll go get your own drink

You'll no longer need me to give you food and replenishment

You're one day going to grow older and in the end you'll grow smaller

See, you are going to go to kindergarten and there you'll meet many young and fresh boys and girls. They'll race around and around pretending to be tigers and lions and princesses, and dogs.

And you're going to dream that you could be just that, that you could disappear into the Sahara, not knowing that it's a desert, and you'll dream of living in a fortress not knowing that your life was in line for the throne

And it will be beautiful, your mind will be beautiful

But then those days will begin to disappear, and suddenly you will be in 3rd grade, and the kids playing basketball will be the cool ones, and suddenly playing pretend will be seemingly in the past

But baby boy you will be forced to chose between the dream and the reality and you will be judged either way

And my sweet child it does not end there, After 6 years of your life being in this system, you will begin to see your dreams of castle life become a reality

A monarchy will form that you had no control over. Soon, you will recognize that you are a part of a complicated feudal system, developed out of years of survival techniques and based entirely on make-belief

It's all about the survival of the fittest, despite the fact that the laws of biology change on a yearly basis based on trends and looks

It's no one's  fault, baby. You have been put into this system for so long that you have simply adapted to the conditions

All students kept in  isolated unit begin to develop territorial exclusiveness, leaders arise, victims befall the wrath of the leader to show dominance

Animalistic ways, pulled out of the science books you will have started to read in the sixth grade as the world just begins to tumble before you. The tigers, and the lions, the princesses, and the bitches will be more clear then

You'll be able to see them with your own eyes

As though you were in a zoo, don't feed and don't touch the animals. They will not show love back

Oh baby it will hurt

You had dreams of the Sahara but now you are back on a factory line being sorted into different groups and subgroups. Until all that you'll really dream of being is human.

Maybe you'll dress in all black or maybe you will dress in all pink, but don't you worry about that now child, because everyone else will worry about it for you when the time comes

And then you will go to high school and you'll think "Nothing matters anymore, I'll be gone in 1-2-3-4 years and then  l'll be out and it will be over.

You will be comfortable in your group ,"selected by color, texture, nationality, ideology! Oh the diversity" and it will be so well established that you can move on and find a new group when that isn't poppin

And you'll sit at designated tables, and you will watch others with sad eyes and you'll feel

isolation

And the goal is to live like you aren't going to die, but you feel dead inside

Dead because everything you dreamed is real and all you are is resentment and bitterness wrapped into a hollow shell

Poked and prodded with colleges colleges college, depending on tests to make you free

And baby then you'll get there and you'll see that nothing has changed, it hasn't changed baby, just different people with different groups based on income

verses daddy's money,

It will have been 14 years of your life spent in this place.

But don't worry baby, I'll hold you in my arms

We'll be a family of empty shells,

in a nation of animals
