My Voice

Poetry taught me more than I can compare

Sadness and pain were not all that were there

Happiness and laughter are a part of the equation

That poetry concocts in this whole life situation

I learned how to love all the words that befall me

Even in times of need when I feel I can not see

It taught me how to embrace what I cannot feel

To try and understand how much words can heal

My heart has been broken a million and one times

Yet hope has always been there deep beneath my rhymes

Because poetry taught me to never lose faith

Even if it seems like there must be a wraith

Hanging over me in the darkest of my days

When there clearly is no way to be saved from the haze

Poetry taught me a lot of things

About life and love and exactly what it brings

Yet there is nothing more important

Than the way it taught me to be more reliant

On myself and what I believe

To speak of what I can achieve

Without the pain of the past holding me down

And holding my life captive in a dusty old town

Poetry taught me that my voice is power

And that I can do all if I only stay determinedly dour

Me
