In my 8th grade English class I had to write an essay about the origin and meaning of my name
My name is Taylor
Taylor is of English and Germanic origin, and it means maker of clothes
Cutter of cloth
Just change the “i” to a “y”
Imagine my disappointment
Not “crowned one” like my little brother
(Seriously his name means king)
Not “knowledge” or “guardian” or “pure”
Like some of my classmates
Simply “seamstress”
And who could I blame really?
My parents?
That wouldn’t be fair
Even though Taylor was the 4th most popular girl baby name the year I was born
Needless to say my 13-year-old self was left feeling less than ordinary
Once again
I might as well have changed my identity to
First name LACKING
Last name SIGNIFIGANCE
So I grew quiet
But in the silence I started to listen
And I could hear
“Tailors are artists, skillful, and competent
They create the very things that cover and protect your bodies”
And I began to finally feel the layers of fabric that warm my soul
The smooth silk of compassion
Cotton soft as unending love
Sovereignty thick like wool
One layer for every time He calls my name
For I am dressed in His righteousness
Clothed with His presence
The very fabric of my being is sewn with His grace
I am fearfully and wonderfully made in His image
And even though I am a helpless, mindless sheep
I am a blameless sheep of the Good Shepherd
So when I am asked “what is your name?”
I no longer have to listen to the whispers of doubt and uselessness authored by the father of lies
“Who am I?”
I am His
And He is mine
My name is Child of God
My name is Friend of Jesus
My name is Chosen One
Ambassador for Christ
Disciple
Daughter of the One True King
Citizen of Heaven
My name is Christian
