My Mother and I
My Mother and I
As a child, you held me
And I curled up next to you
You loved me so much.
I fell asleep with my head on your shoulder
As we laughed together.
You loved me so much.
Even when I messed up
You’d have a clean slate ready
You loved me so much.
...
But then I grew up
And entered my “angsty” teenage years
...
I lied and hurt you
I didn’t show you the love that you deserved
But you loved me anyways.
I screamed and said that you didn’t understand
You screamed back, sometimes
Still you loved me anyways.
I was nice to you when I needed something
And when I didn’t I could be rude
Yet you loved me anyways.
I watched you battle cancer
And win
And I wasn’t there as much as I should’ve been
And you loved me anyways.
…
We didn’t end on the best of terms
And away to college I went
…
Now I miss laughing and
The smell of the house around the holidays
But I know you love me.
I miss coming home exhausted from work
And you making me dinner, now matter how late.
But I know you love me.
I call you and though we don’t talk for long
I look forward to our conversations
And I know you love me.
…
A mother’s love should be unconditional
Yours is.
…
I love you, too.
