The Music of Life

Everyone knows that feeling,

The one when you hear the first seconds of a song

And as soon as it clicks you start singing,

All caution to the wind,

Your screechy, untrained voice belting out notes,

Notes that were never meant for your limited vocal range, but they bring you joy anyway.

I couldn’t live without that.

When you’re in the car with your mom,

And she finds that old CD,

And you both smile because you both know every word,

You laugh at her and she laughs at you,

Every song you sing together with enthusiasm,

Knowing that only love can explain why you enjoy singing together.

I couldn’t live without that.

Those moments when you feel beaten,

Broken and vulnerable, you reach for your playlist,

Finger through the songs until you find The One.

You  press play and it all melts away,

The tears, and well of anger, dry up,

Leaving you to sing and forget.

I couldn’t live without that.

Music is joy and love and anger and sorrow;

Losing yourself in a song that you will always know,

Travelling back in time,

Through the years of burdened and piled memories,

To a place where everything was perfect and nothing mattered,

As the world falls away.

I couldn’t live without that.
