Mom, Dad

Mom, Dad-

Today I was born unto this world,

I hope that it is fair and just and kind,

Just as I wish to be to the world.

Mom, Dad-

Today I started school.

I asked a group of kids if I could play with them,

But they told me no.

They said I look different.

Mom, Dad-

After weeks of not playing with anyone,

I found two friends who let me play tag with them.

They said they don't care what color my skin is.

They said that everyone deserves to be treated the same.

Mom, Dad-

It's been awhile since I've been teased for being black,

But I still remember what it's like

And how it made me feel.

So my friends and I, we're going to protest for equality.

Don't worry, I'll be safe at the protest.

The police will be there.

Mom, Dad-

The police here are more harsh than the ones you see giving speeding tickets.

They have really advanced weapons,

Like the ones you would see in war movies.

One of the officers has been watching me all day.

Mom, Dad-

I swear I didn't do anything wrong.

That police officer's dog, he got really close and it scared me.

I yelled and jumped out of the way,

I didn't mean for it to seem like I was doing anything to harm them.

Before I knew it there were gun shots.

I could feel the holes in my body.

Everything went black.

Mom, Dad-

I thought the police motto was

"To serve and protect".

All I wanted was equality for everyone.
