Midnight Swim

As the night draws

Ever-deeper,

The first drops of

Fear fall to our brows.

The lake, silvery and

Peppered with

The reflections of

The stars,

Beckons for us to

Take the plunge.

We walk slowly,

We talk quietly,

Shaking,

Too afraid to hold hands.

I ask you to stop,

And think of me

Once more.

Yet you say nothing;

You cannot hear me.

The words cannot

Escape the prison of

My mouth.

The water is cold

Against my shivering

Skin,

So I get goosebumps

Like little hills on the

Landscape of

My body.

You don’t follow me in

Like you promised you would.

Finally the sound escapes,

Loud and screeching,

Help me,

Please don’t do this,

Please please,

Please help me,

You promised

To never hurt me,

You promised,

You promised.

My tears mix

With the lake

And my mouth is filled

With the water,

Bitter and dirty,

Tasting of betrayal

And dishonesty.

I spit it out

As best I can,

Gasping for the

Fresh taste of

The past,

Of truth and

Love, a rarity.

No more.

As the rippling

Fingers of the water

Pull me under,

The last thing

I see is

The moon,

The lake,

And my

Screaming figure

Reflected in your

Beautiful eyes.
