Midnight Chess

Cavernous halls,

Shadows flickering on the walls,

Candlelight burning dim.

Haunting, slinking, watching,

Waiting for your move.

No escape now,

Headed for disaster,

Time to meet your end.

Illusive brute,

Kept neatly tucked away.

But now released,

Fiendish beast,

Fury first and final.

Falling, falling

Hit rock bottom,

Nothing around but glass.

Broken mirrors,

Faded fast.

Holds but a moment,

Never seen again.

Trapped, confused, shaken.

Buckled knees and silent pleas,

Just make the spinning stop.

Surely just a dream misshapen,

Misunderstood, forgotten.

Slowly rotting to the core,

Fingers raw from scratching.
