Memories That Never Fade

Do you remember grass stains in our brand-new jeans?

Can you recall scraped elbows and banged up knees?

I remember grandmother’s hands as she sewed a quilt

I remember mama’s flour caked hands from baking bread

Do you remember getting up early to feed the animals?

Can you recall racing to mailbox to bring back the letters?

I remember grandfather’s pipe smoke and peppermint

I remember papa’s stories he told us by the fireplace

Do you remember when our grandparents became ill

Can you recall when they started to forget us

I remember grandfather crying because he just didn’t know

I remember grandmother crying because she didn’t understand

Do you remember when our parent started to lose hope

Can you recall the nights they couldn’t sleep?

I remember mama saying it was so unfair

I remember papa saying it’ll be over soon

Do you remember creating the family memory book?

Can you recall filling it with pictures and short stories?

I remember our grandparents faces light up

I remember our parents smiling at our creation

Do you remember that the dearest memories never fade?

Can you recall the memories that gave you hope?

I remember the memories that taught me to grow

I remember the memories that will forever remain in my heart
