Make This Work

And it happens again
When least expected
I confess what should've been
What I could've had
The last of your words
Burning on the edge of my lips
Won't carry me to past moments
Won't change what I hoped
Could've been undone
The outline of your words
Paint a picture behind swollen lids
And your voice chases me
To the far corner of my mind
As a reminder of what's left
The memories
Instigating each breath
The pain as sharp
As a thousand goodbyes
And yet
It's still
Nothing compared
To all the faith I had in you
And how its shards
Still scrambled
Lay at your doorstep
I remember to stay up all night
With the stars
Cause sleeping is for dreamers
And this is my reality
But maybe one day
This game will grow old
And these words
Will just simply be a stain
On the past
You don't need regret
To fix what you left broken
Just pick up the pieces for me
And I'll hope to God
That we get through
Cause this is bigger than us.
