The Light of Death

You never realize what’s in front of you;

Until it’s gone.

You never believe the possibility,

That the thing you love most,

Could be gone.

I should know,

A 4-time blow,

To the heart.

Grieving,

Believing,

My grief for this sad, sad thing

We call “Death.”

Those eyes,

Their eyes,

Closed.

The body,

Their body,

Still.

So incredibly still.

The will,

The pill,

Of Life,

Just… Gone.

Sometimes, I imagine one more day,

Just one more day,

To see them again.

The light in those eyes,

Forever closed with death;

Dim as a worn light,

Just… glosses over them

As much as a woman in the city.

Exactly who she used to be.

The cold.

A chill in summer,

Freezing up the body,

Their body,

Turning all warm dreams,

All warm gleams of their light,

Into a frozen block of ice…

The soul,

Their soul,

Will keep breathing.

Cheating death.

I know they’ll be okay now.

I know I’ll be okay now.

Knowing they’re safer above,

Happier above,

Shining their light down on us;

Until we look up,

And join them too…

You never know what you’ve lost,

Until it’s gone.

Time.

Love.

Family.

Life.

Life, we believe is forever.

Until we’re just like one of them.

Dead.
