Less of Me

Does this make me less of me
That I'd rather wear an afro than a perm?
Why am I to be considered
less than society's
image of me?
My brown skin
and
my big eyes.
The way my cheeks puff when I smile?
Does this make me less of me?
I didn't change myself
I just didn't conform to your image of me!
See, Mrs. Angelou had reason
to walk
like she had oil wells pumpin'
in her living room.
Well honey,
so do I!
Just like her,
I'm enslaved in my own.
So does my confidence offend you?
For that, you break me down?
Stay down.
Let you make your way around.
Does this make me less of me ?
I am me!
Is that a problem?
Issue perhaps?
Honey, get yo mouth off that!
Keep your mind on track!
See.
It seems to me
that you're too busy
to work on yaself
because you're so focused on me.
I mean,
I'm flattered, I am.
Which is why
right now I so easily stand
with my spine straight up,
my smile not dimmed,
and
my pep still peppin'!
Gone now!
Shoo, flee!
I think I've proved my simple point.
Your opinion will never make me
less of me.
