Last I Heard

Last I heard

You were in love,

Falling fast,

Falling free,

But falling short.

Summer began for you,

Struck by a single match,

Your world caught fire,

Came to life.

It all became too hot to touch,

And burned your skin.

But the flames didn’t last long.

Winter came fast,

And the frost was unkind.

Your heart froze and refused to pound.

He left before the spring,

And left you with a mess to clean up,

With ashes from the fire,

Swept under the rug.

Last I heard,

He never wrote to you like he said he would,

And you tried to fight the tears the best you could.

But who are you kidding?

Your smile is crooked and out of place,

And worry always stains your face.

He could never fix the sickness,

Stirring inside of you.

But have no fear,

For love never fades,

Like the pictures he never stayed for,

Like the girl he left behind.

Last I heard,

You left this town.

But away from me is not where you belong.

So, fold the corners of your lonely soul

And place your heart in the centerfold,

And mail it home.

For home is where the heart belongs,

With me, the cure you’ve had all along.
