An Instant

You pull yourself together for a minute,
Only to fall apart again in an instant.

Mom, dad do I look happy now?
Should your perfect little daughter just take a bow?

Mom, dad do I look picture ready?
Do you think I look good enough to go study?

Mom, dad what do you both want from me?
Why can't I just for once feel free?

Mom, dad yes I know I make mistakes . . .
Do you both think you're saints?

Mom, dad I didn't mean that,
Yes, I know it's perfection I lack,

Mom, dad you planned out my life,
Of course that's why I know I'll never be a good wife,

Mom, dad have you noticed I'm down?
Have you noticed the ever present frown?

Mom, dad are you proud?
I really tried to make my college application loud,

Mom, dad I don't want to bug,
But when was the last time you both gave me a hug?

Mom, dad do you love me?
Or am I just another one of the treasures you see?

I heard something at school,
And I guess for life it's an unspoken rule,

You pull yourself together for a minute,
Only to fall apart again in an instant.
