Your loving embrace

The way you smelled

All of the fun we used to have

I thought about your smile;

How it shined like the brightest peak at dawn

And glowed until dusk

Dark, saddening dusk

I thought of the nights we would spend together

Making food

Watching cartoons

Finishing crosswords

I thought about how beautiful you were

Even at your age

Even in a hospital gown

You were a beautiful spirit

Then I thought about the last month

In and out of hospitals

Visits only on Sundays

Not really knowing what was going on

Lastly, I thought about the last day…

How I only see you in photographs

How it’s been five years since

The sadness
