I Hear America Crying
I hear America crying, because
people are beginning to question
why it is that she is great.
What’s so “great” about America, when
you are forced to assimilate yourself,
to pretend to be someone you’re not.
I myself, am not accepted for my natural features,
I am forced to disguise myself to be accepted by society.
I hear America crying, because
there are walls and barriers that separate us from being one.
What’s so “great” about America if
because of my race, I have to do more than others to be considered.
“…for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”
so America advocates.
I hear America crying,
with me,
I don’t even feel comfortable being myself.
Whose land is this, and
how did we actually get here, and
how dear I be proud to call myself American when
this land was snatched from its original owners.
When we call our self “American”, not even knowing how America got its name.
Not knowing that we are actually calling ourselves American after a man,
an explorer,
Amerigo.
I hear America crying,
What does it mean to be American?
If to be American means to assimilate yourself,
to not feel comfortable, to be judged by others,
to take from others,
What does this say about this country?
I found America crying.
We are a country that is divided
by race and social class.
We judge one another based on our differences.
We let society tell us what and what not to do.
No one knows why we are here,
no one knows the true meaning of life.
We are all human we bleed the same blood.
We all need the same things in life to survive.
Let’s take a break from judging one another,
let’s stop competing for once.
Let’s work together and show people we are not judgmental,
that we are accepting of different cultures.
Let’s not have society make choices for us,
let’s make choices ourselves,
let’s stand up,
let’s take charge.
I see America smiling,
we can work together and build an empire.
Let’s show the world
what’s so great about America.
