Reversed Seasons

I fell in love with you in the fall when you fell in love with the way I spoke and the curve of my ears. I fell in love with the way you would wrap your arms around me so tightly as if I might float away.

I fell in love with the way you'd keep your hand on my lower back, even when hugging another person.

(I became infatuated with the raspiness of your voice at two in the morning that kept me warm in those cold winter months).

We fell apart in the spring when we both forgot who I was and what we meant to each other. Mouths full of laughter dwindled to mouths full of cotton as you told me that you didn't know what I wanted you to say.

You disappeared into your lover in the summer

and I kept disappearing into you

until you disappeared altogether.

This poem reflects on my relationship with one of my best friends. My favorite part is the 4th stanza, because one night we sat in a dark car and discussed our unmutual feelings and we both ended up crying. He said he didn't want to hurt me, but regardless, he did.
