I am Human

Regardless of what I do or become,

One thing about me will never change.

Whatever amount of joy and grief come,

I am human every year of age.

For nine months my frail body developed –

Inside my dear mother’s womb: completely enveloped.

The newborn who screamed over breathing air –

Was me long ago: I was there!

From rolling, to crawling, to finally walking,

I grew and learned and began talking.

Through preschool, kindergarten, and also grade school.

I furiously studied how to be cool.

Succumbing to peer pressure, I made mistakes –

Like plagiarizing papers and turning in fakes.

I abandoned my studies to seek approval –

From my friends who desperately needed renewal.

But when I realized I wouldn’t graduate,

I reformed before it was too late.

Slowly, I transformed my D’s into B’s.

I received a diploma and was pleased.

Against all odds, the university accepted me –

And scholarships made my education stress free.

I have been given a second chance.

My wasted years don’t show any resemblance.

This is my life story so far.

That I will never again live subpar –

Is my promise to God and man.

I will succeed for I am human.
