Human Rights

I hear a lot of stories in the news

About people not being treated like

People

It’s hard to read and

Hard to understand

I want to understand it.

I want to find the people,

The ones that are scared, that

Can’t plea to a government,

Because their government doesn’t care

And I want to write them in pencil

And turn them into blood and flesh

Their struggles are not an ocean away, not

A clip on the Google news homepage

Their struggles are (should be) our

Struggles, I will make it

My struggle.

I want to take these words that

I am still learning how to use

And forge them in a way that

Opens the eyes of the people living under

A government that acknowledges

Basic rights

So we can fight for the people

Who are not just an index finger

Pointed at a map

In a classroom
