Hiding My Heart

Close my eyes to see if I can hide for a while

From everything I’ve seen and said and done

But hiding in the darkness doesn’t extinguish the light

That hunts for me and finds the darkest shadows of my heart

In these places are the secrets that I hold

The quiet late night tears

The truth is a painful one that doesn’t care

For the broken shield I put up around my heart

The light that searches for the truth

Seeks to obliterate the sheltering shadows

That protect the peace within my soul

When I close my eyes tight against the light

I forget I have to close my heart as well

But it gets lonely around here

And so I set out again to replace cracks with fissures

And I fail to hide from the light
