Hiding behind Deceit

The Phantom wore a mask

To cover his deformities and flaws

Hesitant he was, lowly his head hung

And the “wonderful” wizard of Oz wasn’t so wonderful

A coward living in a word of hypocrisy was he

Phony and fabricated people are all around

He was likely to be alone and live in his miseries

And I, love reading, writing, and learning all day

At least, that’s what people appear to perceive

I try to be genuine and try to be true

But being me, isn’t an easy thing to do.

In this world

Being you isn’t enough

Being “you,” means

Being the “alluring” you

Being the “captivating” you

Being the “glamorous” you

You can’t just be “you”

Stepping out from behind these titles

Is a horrifying thought

Escaping the formalities of this world

is dangerous and horrifying

But, once you escape-

You are free.

You aren’t tied up and annexed

To the lies society presents you

Feeling the freedom of you-

Is worth it.

Stop being the phantom; be you
