In Her Dreams

She stands there looking at him

Seemingly indifferent to his presence

Outside calm, as if it’s just another day

Inside warring on, a battlefield of emotions

That she’s trying not to display

A smile pasted on her face

Trying to hide the pain

Love lost, forgotten, buried deep inside

With a tombstone stamped on its grave

Hope rears its head, betraying her

As he gives her a hug to say farewell

She tamps it down and hugs him back

Friendly, indifferent, but warring within herself

As soon as he’s gone, a tear threatens to escape her eye

But she fights it back, won’t let them see her cry

She needs to keep up this pretense

This façade that everything is alright

She needs to let go

Move on with her life

He has, and she will

She only needs time

She says goodbye to her friends

Leaves them, goes home

Sits on her bed, and writes a song

Gives it a name, plays it all night long

Lays her head down, mind whirring with thoughts

What could have been, what will be,

What she wishes will come

Tears fall to her pillow as she closes her eyes

In her dreams alone, their love survives
