Heartbeat

Their hearts were beating

His was quick, and hers was fast.

And while time was fleeting

They thought they’d forever last.

Their two hearts began to flutter.

They learned to come together.

Flocking with one another,

Like birds of a feather.

Their hearts began to pound.

They began to hum.

They resonated in sound,

As if they were one.

The hearts had become weak.

The years weighted down.

Joints beginning to creak

Soon to be in the ground

Her heart was still beating.

His had stopped altogether.

Her heart was feeling,

For the love, they held forever.

There is no heartbeat.

Lost is their rhyme.

The love found in those heartbeats

Has stood the test of time.
