The Girl in the Candy Shop

I wondered what crossed her mind as she gasped,

And her eyes sparkled with the echoes of the taffy glass.

I wondered if she felt the pain and emptiness,

That the mirrors and illuminated columns served,

Or if she felt warmth and comfort in her reflection.

I wondered how she would feel if she returned,

When she’s older,

Will corruption claim her as a victim as well?

I hoped she would never forget the crystal chandeliers,

And the enchantment they bestowed upon her.

As I watched the girl in the candy shop,

I wondered if she would remain captivated by the pastels,

Rather than the negative space.
