Get My Groove On!

Since I've been here,
I have been a dark thing.
Waiting all of this time in the bushes,
Sad and alone.
Hoping someone will come and take me home,
But not tonight

Tonight,
Light pollution sinks into iteslf
And I am a star in the darkness that's left.
Tonight,
There's a party at the Bell Tower.
And I'm ready to feel the base in my chest
As a second heartbeat.

I go there of my own will,
Because I am ready to be a streak of energy
A heat of reaction,
Someone who is not wishing for anything other than what I've got.

At first arrival,
I am a tentative thing;
The first rays of sunshine at the dawn of a new day.
I am the searching the faces of these new beings
Hoping someone will want to know my name.

Then it happens.
A new song comes on and
"This is my jam!"
I make a sound similar
To a New Year's Horn,
And waste no time getting onto the dancefloor.

It is time to break out into my happy dance.
It is a little wiggle here and there.
A turn, a bend, a kick, a shake.
It is loud bang and a quiet fall,
And then people are noticing me.

This is the moment that I have been waiting for;
When I become a challenge,
And everyone else is my answer.
When the floor is crowded with people who want to dance beside me.
When alone is just air,
And I am too hot to breathe it.
When,
At the end of the night,
People exchange names and numbers with me.

When it is over,
I am sweaty and excited and satisfied
And no longer alone.
I am one of millions of fireflies
In a five year old's backyard
At the end of the hottest summer.
