FOUR CARRIED ONE

Its just like it happen yesterday.
We four had to carry one.
One at a time.
Because the medevac zone.
Was so small.
The wounded first.
To try and save a life.
The dead, we placed aside.
We were so busy.
We did not notice.
How tired we were.
That we had made 4 trips.
Of FOUR CARRIED ONE.
Was I dreaming?
It was just like it.
Happened  yesterday.
FOUR CARRIED ONE.

On 18 October 1967, my infantry company of Golf Company 2nd Battalion 1st Marines.

Was traveling in a two companies column, trying to get to Highway 1 in South Vietnam.

We were in a national forest that was quite thick.

So we had to travel on a path that was cut by the Vietnamese.

The Nationa Vietnamese Army of Vietnam (NVA) let my infantry through the killing zone of an ambush.

And open-ed fire on the last company of Hotel Company 2nd Battalion 1st Marines.

At the same time firing a few mortar rounds in our direction.

Lucky they were hitting some way ahead.

Events of that day, led to my writing of that day in FOUR CARRIED ONE.

Operation Medina of October 1967 took place because the 1st Marine Division had moved north from Danang .

The area of the operation was part that the 3rd Marine Division did not cover.

For lack of enough man-power, we might have been lucky that most of the NVA were moving either towards Khe Sanh or Hue for Tet of 1968.
