Forsaken

“No,” that’s all I’ve ever known
As my trial approached
And the jury was assembled
I knew from the beginning
What the verdict would be

I say the trial as a farce
As they would already have
Preconceive notions about
My actions and my motives

This was confirmed
When I took the stand
Raising my right hand
And looking out across the room

The prosecution smirked
Already claiming their victory
And I smirked back
Much to their surprise

I broke the chains binding my wrists
And laughed loudly for the first time in ages
I stood proudly before my accusers
And pointed my fingers

“How can you condemn me?”
When you cannot stand when others do the same to you
Their shocked faces gape at me
Opening and closing like a fish

I only laugh again and turn
Marching confidently out of the building
Hearing the shouts and screams of the chaos I caused
Echoing behind me

And for the first time
I feel it
The happiness bubbling inside me
Finally bursting free

I may have only said one thing
But it was enough for now
Finally I am able to sprout my wings
And fly
