The First Poem
"Roses are red, Violets are blue"
This was my first poem
I heard it when I was only about six years old
In middle school there were more rhymes
And the study of Edgar Allan Poe began
He showed us that every poem needed meaning
Rhymes and feelings became the only definition for poetry
Nothing else
This changed my senior year of high school
A poetry project began in my english class
I found myself writing about a poster on the wall
Every day a poem was due but it never felt like an assignment
For my final graded poem, I wrote to my best friend
It had a lot of feeling but I forgot the rhymes
Since then I have written a lot more
And I owe it to the first poem I ever heard
