An Evolution of a Lifetime

When we were little

We were told to wear this and act like that.

To brush our hair and smile,

To hold ourselves high,

And ask for help when needed.

But when help was needed

Nothing but our shadow was there to pick us up.

When we were young

We wore jeans and hoodies in mid June

Because it was our fault

We avoid eye contact so we don’t draw attention

Because attention wasn’t what we wanted,

But it was all we got.

When we were older

Whispers and calls violated us in the streets,

Tugging on us like an unwanted friend.

And at night,

We keep our TVs on

Because the voices are the only thing

keeping us from being alone.

And here we are.

Our bodies repulse us,

Not only because of the bruises,

But because of the unseen marks painted on our skin.

We don't love ourselves because you told us you did.

And look where that got us.
