TO ENTERTAIN THE GODS

To Entertain The gods: by Paul Gray

With equity I've prayed for thee,
Petitions of the gods;
Almighty Zeus, Dionysus
With supplication prods.

I prayed these words yea thrice per day
Yet find not yield nor favor
And by the god's disdain for me
They revel in it's flavor.

Athena's wisdom I've implored
Though fate hath dealt me this;
By Hades lust my pain adored
Denying me your kiss

Hephaestus whose heart hath forged
Allegiance with his whore
And by a husbands bond hath made
Alliance evermore.

The lesser gods will mock me
As commanded by their ward.
Like Hector to Achilles
I must yield beneath their sword;

Condemned by love as heaven sent
To entertain the gods;
This hopeless trust I rest in thee
Survives against all odds.
