I walk by a man on the side of the road
hungry, alone, broken and cold.
Yet, somehow in my twisted self righteousness I continue to walk,
on my way to church, I don't have time to stop.
besides I stopped for coffee so wasting more time is impractical
as if having a zip code could ever make me more valuable.
We believe that “feeling bad” is emotional justification,
as if my pious thoughts were any consolation.
And if “faith without deed is nothing”
to this starving soul, my empathy must be disgusting.
The Bible says “you shall reap what you sow”
and God keeps his promises; as seen by the rainbow.
And if what I sow is self-importance and neglect,
there is no doubt that this is what my harvest will reflect.
The Pastor preaches of God's unconditional love
and how the Holy Spirit came to Jesus in the form of a dove.
But there's distractions that make paying attention such a chore
because I have a new game and just beat my high score.
And I'm glad I got that coffee because without it I'd take a nap
and oh, I guess he's finished because it's time to clap.
“Wake up! Oh, Sleeper!” I hear God say,
You attend the house of God yet don't give my children the time of day
while you sit lethargic and complacent,
my people lay dying to your adjacent.
Instead of apathy, this injustice should instill rage.
Rise up Oh, lost generation! It is time to engage.
