The Edge
I stand on the edge of a chasm
Wide and deep
but I need not jump for death is already upon me.
The flames of doubt and despair scorch my mind,
the ice of anger and hatred suffocate my heart,
and the sharp sword of betrayal pierces my grieving soul.
The cares of this world have destroyed me.
I am numb and alone.
Hope and faith are but things of memory.
I stand motionless, staring at the blackness beneath me,
Contemplating, debating, waiting.
Waiting for a message, waiting for a sign.
But I know that I wait in vain. No voices speak, nor signs blaze,
nor soul steps out to save me.
I am alone with only despair to counsel me.
And so I stand looking out at the chasm, unable to
choose between pain and death.
But no matter my choice, I shall never escape them.
For there is pain both in life and death,
in hope and despair,
in waiting and deciding.
And thus, I cannot win, for I face a problem with
no solution, a maze with no end.
My only escape is to jump.
I fall into the chasm,
dark, and wide, and deep,
but I do not fear,
for death is already upon me.
