Easy

When I was real young
My momma told me
She loved me because
I was easy
She told me this made me heaven sent
Momma didn't know being easy
Would make me helpless

See, when I was real young
My daddy told me
That I was stupid
I was useless
I could never win
He only loved me when I was quiet
'Cause that's what was easy for him

See, I was real young
Nobody showed me
I had a choice
I didn't have to agree with them
Oh, how it's so clear now
Why I've been silent
Why I've been complicit

'Cause it was easy

I'm not as young now
I've shed the old me
I'm not as easy
And I have a voice, see
I use it to cry loud
I use it to say "no" now
I use to speak my truths
I use it to help others too

And easy has taught me
To disagree profusely
She's taught me how
To be a better man than my
father
She's taught me to judge less
And to go after what she thought
She'd never conquer

Easy has shown me
I'm more than what
Others believe of me
She's shown me
The parts of me that
Needed more love
And that even loving myself
Wouldn't be so easy

But easy has shown me
That working through pain is worth it
That being uncomfortable builds strength
That challenging myself enough can lead me
To higher frequencies
Where thing's truly are easy
