Dolls

[Inspired by Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House]

You never could have predicted

the reactions that sprung

from Nora's revolutionary decision.

A society frozen in time;

a woman's duty is to love others first

and to love herself is a crime.

Biology may have brought us here,

but it can never define us

if coexistence is to ever be near.

These girls are part of a set

To be held and to hold, to bear and to pet

the parents and children who are and will be

the dolls in those girls' playsets.

My dollhouse was destroyed years ago.

Burned to pieces,

but what you don't know

is that from its ruins

something better, something real

was made to grow.

I may be stranger

than these other girls

for staring in the eyes of danger

and letting the fire burn

I may have even lit the match

on my own dolls

but what you faill to see

is the inimitable knowledge

that fire gave me

Put your dolls down, tuck the dollhouse away

if you want to understand me or the world, realize:

It's no longer time to play.
