Diversity

Diversity is precious

You can find it near and far

Diversity is celebrating people as they are

From the island of America where Christopher first came

To a strong, determined woman, boldly offering a flame

One large melting pot of faces, some from far and some from near

Oh America, the free and brave:

Diversity is here

Yesterday we turned away from different looking friends

Today we understand that every color smoothly blends

“I have a dream”-that dream came true-but don’t yet take a bow

The flame’s beginning to ignite:

Diversity is now

We live in perfect harmony:

Diversity is sweet

Hold hands and wave to strangers when you’re walking down the street.

Be unique and all-accepting: Diversity is true

It’s good and great and peaceful because of all of you

Diversity- it once meant equal treatment and respect

But people dance around the word to be politically correct

If “diverse” is oh-so-special, and we’re all so full of cheer

Why, when mentioned, people’s eyes fill up with foreign fear?

Diversity’s a broken word that colleges still use

There’s a newer definition: racial riots in the news

Where’s diversity in pride and strikes and wars and lower wage

Yes, “our land is so diverse”, but where’s diversity in rage?

Creativity’s been cornered and locked up in a cage

And Charity’s applauded with a spotlight on the stage

Integrity is altering to fit a different view

Now the outcome of Diversity

Is up to all of you
