Distant Memory

The woman has commanded him to stop moving and is aiming at him, her eyes filled with contempt.

The man puts his hand up and carefully lowers himself to his knees as the woman tries to shimmy over to where he is.

He tries to explain himself but she is not listening, she insults him and tells him to hush as not to ruin her concentration.

Her foot catches on a dent and she tumbles into the hole, only supporting herself with a small branch her hand is barely hanging onto.

She demands the man’s help, and he obediently shoots out to grab her hand until he stops himself.

He looks at the woman’s hands and notices they are solely occupied with the small branch they are desperately clutched onto.

The threatening aura around the woman is replaced by sheer helplessness.

The man gets up with a crack of his knees, adjusts his shirt, and begins to walk away.

The woman’s demands are more urgent and repetitive as the man gets farther and farther away until they are a distant memory.
