My name is Christina Saraceno and I have Cerebral Palsy, which has confined me to a wheelchair ever since birth. I chose to write an essay describing what I think determination means, because I believe you have to be determined to be able to push pass any disability that anyone may be faced with. I have gained much of my determination through movies such as, The Blind Side and My Sisters Keeper. Throughout my search to find determination; I gained a sense of independence and motivation to become a better person inside and out. Throughout my schooling career I have always been in mainstream classes, and that alone has helped me become more determined in many different ways. When attending school I am always determined to make new friends and to fit in. I am able to fit in and make new friends because I am able to show my peers that I am just like them and never let the small things get in the way. Having the confidence to make friends and speak up for myself has helped shape me into the person I am today. With my senior year of high school coming to an end; I feel independent enough and eager to start my college career. I am aware that college life will be far from easy, especially in wanting to study social work, but I am ready for the challenge. I work with a physical therapist twice a week to work on gaining more independent skills. With college quickly approaching, I am even more determined to work harder in physical therapy to become more independent in many areas that can benefit me in becoming a young adult. I am also involved in clubs and an honor society this year. Being involved in these clubs has not only made me grow as a person, but has also helped me raise awareness about Cerebral Palsy with my peers, and how I am just like them in so many ways. I don’t like to look at my disability as something that limits me, but rather as a challenge. To be able to push passed that certain challenge requires a great amount of determination, and if you have a positive outlook on life, anything is possible.
