Denying My Roots

Location

The first step to denying my heritage

was learning to hide my roots

I tried to be like these white faces

‘cause they go places

and what’s left for a spanish girl like me?

They told me I was lucky,

lucky for having light skin,

lucky for having light eyes

but my hair-

was the one thing I needed to change about me

I had to hide,

hide those Cuban, Colombian and Puerto Rican locks

Hide my roots

If I could go back and change it

I would bring my roots back and embrace it

Embrace my culture

Embrace the fact

that I will always be a hispanic girl

and that’s nothing to be ashamed of
