The Declaration of Independence
It has been many years since we landed
And many more since we set sail
But I guess Great Britain couldn’t stand it
The fact that we had begun to prevail
The scenario we were in
Was much more than we could handle
We were like a thin match, burning close to its end
And Great Britain was a strong was candle
The thirteen colonies were at war
With Great Britain none the less
With prices beginning to soar
Our fate was put to the test
Lives were lost over the series of battles
And many enemies and allies were made
But we sat firmly in our saddles
And watched as Great Britain rued the day
Because on July 4th, 1776
Or so it was said
Was the signing of an important document
The Declaration of Independence
This document is important
Let us behold
Famous signatures that the declaration shows
But there may be some that you do not know
There was a man named Lyman Hall
But there is someone else’s name that we mock
Whose signature is the most important of them all
And that would be none other than John Hancock
The Declaration states that we have unalienable rights
But what’s it really saying
That no matter what enemy we fight
Our rights will continue, never straying
It’s almost ironic, the signing of this document
Or at least it was back then
But I guess the rules always get bent
Because eight of the signers were from Great Britain
We didn’t beat Great Britain with guns
Or by attacking again and again
But rather with our words
And the mighty stroke of a pen
Now how is that possible you may ask
Weapons are mightier than words in any and every way
Well my answer to you class
Is that Great Britain is gone and were here to stay
When they wrote the document
It was meant to send a message
Hoping the effect would be permanent
I’ve got to give them credit
They did their job good
The writers of the Declaration
It did exactly as it should
For the king understood succession
If you listen to the words
Of poor Great Britain’s king
I know this sounds absurd
But he had a problem with separating
Even though Great Britain may have won the battle
I think I can say for sure
That we, us, the thirteen colonies
Have definitely won the war
