Commencement

A solitary day

One I never thought would come

The halls

Bleak and dreary

Will no longer be mine

The familiar faces

The teachers

Both good and bad

Will no longer be there for me

So eager to escape

I forgot to live

In the moment

To enjoy these four years

Now I'm escaping

As I drag my fingers down the lockers

My eyes wander

As I see the room I met my best friend

The teacher I so adored

The places I cried while stressed

The places I rejoiced

All these memories

Come flooding into my brain

Suddenly

I am awakened to reality

To the freshmen

Running and screaming down the hall

My only wish

Is that they realize

How special this time is

And how fast time goes by

Soon enough they will walk in my shoes

Out of the double glass doors

That greet the school

Down the marble steps

In that long white gown

Across the stage

Looking at the hundreds of smiling faces

As I receive my diploma

And walk away

In my beat-up Sperry's

To commence my future
