Civic Center Plaza at Night

I am a sparkling pavement square

under the street lights

I am a street musician packing up

dancing down to the sounds of the subway

I am an echo of 2am sirens

on Market St.

I am a street-wise man on the corner

curled into myself

wearing three ragged coats

trying to stay warm

I am a glowing line of brake lights

stretched across the bay bridge

like a ruby necklace

I am a lone helicopter

hovering over the bay

that all the lovers are wishing on tonight

Tonight, if I were a star

I would implode

collapse in on myself -

I'm not large enough to create a supernova

I am a little girl

realizing just how small I am and

feeling wonder for the first time
